new regimen trial #1 | 11.8

though my minimalist "regimen" involving shampoo, oil, and butter worked pretty well, i wanted to see if i could get better results using actual products. i immediately went to lush because i know they are all cruelty-free, and those i have chosen are also vegan and gluten-free.
unfortunately, all of lush's conditioners contain sulfates, so i was somewhat in a bind of what to use. i just picked up r&b because it was something my manager tried to convince me to love when i worked at lush.

this shows the lack of overall definition to which i was referring in this post.

the process
henna glossed for 1 hour with lush caca noir (1 block melted in 6oz water)
shampooed scalp with lush blousey
conditioned and detangled with lush r&b (2.5oz moisturizer + 1.5oz coconut oil + 1oz water)
squeezed out excess water, coated with coconut oil, and raked in some lush dirty hair cream
i also added in a little streak with maybelline's color tattoo in fierce and tangy (i'm getting super duper bored with my color, but i refuse to compromise my hair's health until i'm done growing my hair)

r&b is now phenomenal for my less porous hair, but i'm pretty sure the glycerin dried it out in the cold winter air when i used it alone as a leave-in. i turned it into a "conditioner," and that worked ok, but considering how much it costs, i won't repurchase. i am planning to try renpure argan oil conditioner next.

i loved everything else (even the pain-in-the-ass henna), though i think i can find something that performs just as well as dirty for less money and masculine fragrance. i am planning to try the shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie and kinky-curly curling custard next.

note: i am planning on swimming weekly on fridays so i will have to reverse the order of some things for my second trial this week.

treating my hair as my crown and glory

Henna has been something I wanted to try, was the gloss that you used messy? And I am loving that little streak of color, do you think you will add more streaks to your hair?

I have not used Henna yet. It's a shame. I know. I love your curls. I have the same problem with any leave-in that contains glycerin, too.

#1 Why did I not know that you used to work at LUSH? Omgosh---LOVE LOVE LOVE that place! I've been planning (and subsequently forgetting) to go there and let them apply a henna treatment. (Ya know---so that I don't have to get my own bathroom stained with my own clumsiness!) Whenever my cousin struggles to define her natural curls, I just apply a protein treatment with heat. it works like a charm!

When you find that less expensive dupe for Dirty--call me! LOL!

Thanks for sharing your #washdayexperience chica!

The Lush henna in itself is more of a gloss because it's mixed with cocoa butter and lots of other stuff. Unfortunately, they use super gritty henna, which makes it kind of a pain. I don't find it messy because I have gotten really good at not making a mess with mixing, but it definitely takes more effort than it should washing it out :-/

I did find someone on etsy who makes henna gloss blocks with really nice ingredients using Jamila henna (which I used to use and is super non-gritty), but it's more expensive. I may splurge after the Lush one runs out.

Also, thank you! I don't think I will add much more because I like the pop that can still be hidden if I need to meet with someone and need to look more professional! That location is perfect, but I may make the section larger though the next time I do it.

Henna is just amazing!!!!! It's not a shame, though! I took a while to try it myself, and then I fell in love with it, and now I'm back in love :)
And thank you - they like to be disobedient at times :-/
And glycerin is NOT the business in this dry weather anymore!

Yeah! I worked there in 2011! I loved working there - I and my apartment always smelled AMAZING!
The henna makes your hair feel great but it is just so gritty (ugh!).
And the protein treatment makes sense! I may try that this weekend.
I will definitely let you know about the dupe! I think a mix of SMCS and KCCC may be kind of close, but if you have to buy them both, it's still kind of expensive!

Thanks! There are so many cool colors available, and it really has staying power! It didn't rub off or anything until I rinsed it out.
