what the-? (aka wash day | 10.25)

i've heard numerous times that you get a new head of hair every 7 years, but considering the fact that 26 is not divisible by 7, i didn't think i would be facing that for another couple of years. i noticed that my hair seemed different a little while ago but didn't pay it much mind. well, my hair must be some sort of overachiever because it's definitely ahead of the game.

observations from a few wash days ago
what's changed:
my hair is no longer porous. it doesn't get drenched immediately or dry quickly anymore.
my hair is no longer fine. my strands used to be like gossamer, but now (with the exception of the very ends) they are definitely much thicker. my hair is still low-medium density, though, which makes me think that maybe i've lost some hair. this makes sense, as my both my mother and maternal grandmother have very thick strands and very low density.
my scalp NEEDS sulfates. ...or it itches relentlessly.
my curls are no longer naturally super defined.
my hair now adores coconut oil.
i have a few gray hairs sprouting.

what this means moving forward:
i've avoided a lot of techniques and products that would over-moisturize my hair like steaming, deep conditioning overnight, and using humectants. looks like those will be making their way into my new regimen.
i have relied very heavily on protein since 2008, but now it seems as though my hair really doesn't like it too much anymore. definitely saying goodbye to daily protein products.
i used to have amazingly defined curls no matter what i did, but now that's not the case without using products. i am hoping they will reawaken some when i up my moisture levels.
i obviously need to re-incorporate sulfates and have been using lots of coconut oil.
i don't plan to do anything about the grays. i think gray hair is gorgeous.

what's still around:
soft hair. though my strands have thickened, they don't seem to have changed all that much in texture. my hair is still soft and easily smoothed.

a new regimen is on the horizon, and it will focus on moisture instead of protein. right now, i've just been rotating three products: white rain tropical coconut shampoo, coconut oil, and argan butter. and i've been bagging when needed. my hair seems to like this so far. i've also looked into the greenhouse effect regimen, and i've been studying the routines of naturals whose hair looks/behaves a lot like mine does now (like quinn, justcoolncurly, and shedel). didn't think i would be starting a whole new natural journey again, but it looks like that's the case.

ps. didn't post hair pics for this week because my hair took uncharacteristically long to dry (not used to this normal porosity!) and it ended up in a bun.

treating my hair as my crown and glory

#1---your hair in this pic is some kinda beautiful! I love the texture.
#2---Who knew that your hair could change so much! Crazy right? Do you think that any of your lifestyle changes affected your strands?

Love the hair. Good luck on the regimen revision. It's great that you've recognized the changes to hair. I'm looking forward to see the new products you end up using.

Awww, I love the texture of your hair girl. And I love that you're taking the time to give it love by getting to know it and greeting it with a new regimen that better suits it (something I'm guilty of not doing lol). Your dimples give me life and unrelated but related: I really like the look of a few gray hairs in a sea of black. I think whatever I do to my hair next will consist of that a little bit lol

I never knew you get a new head of hair every 7 years. Like for real, is that true? Your hair looks great in the pic. I can't wait to see what new things you try out in the coming weeks/months.

Thanks, girl!
And I have NO idea! It is so weird how much stuff has changed. I really did feel it a while ago but I thought that maybe it was a reaction to new water after moving to Maryland from Texas, but it's definitely not. It has changed!!!

Thanks, Leah!
I am keeping it pretty simple for now with just oils and shampoo, but we'll see what happens!

Thank you for the compliments!
I am sort of excited at being back at the stage where I have to do research again. I didn't think my hair would change this drastically, so it's definitely going to be fun to experiment!
I LOVE gray hair... like seriously. It's so shiny and strong! Mine are a totally different texture than the other hairs, though - much thicker and almost straight, which makes me think it'll probably be wavy once fully grown in. So that is something interesting and something I will have to probably research, too.

Yeah! I don't know if it's an old wives' tale, but that's what I've always heard.
And thank you!
I look forward to letting you all in, though I am seriously digging shampoo and oil/butter for now. I have a few things I want to try out.

I have some greys too - actually they're stark-white hairs, not grey. And I started noticing them when I was about 19!!

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Wow! I thought I was getting mine young, but 19 definitely beats me! They must be really long now, huh? I wonder how long mine will be in another few years.

Bailey said...

Oh god no! I never let any of them get too long before I pluck them out haha.

I will be on the sidelines cheering you on

EEEK! Doesn't that hurt?????
I'm just gonna let mine be :)

Thank you!!!!

Haha it only hurts an itty bitty bit! I tried to leave them alone at first, but there's something really really enticing about them. Apparently I couldn't help myself haha.

I began noticing grey hair as soon as I began transitioning. I'm sure it's coincidental but it's odd. I pull them out, not because I have a problem with grey, but it always looks like there is something in my hair!

That's so funny, because whenever I see them, I am taken aback by how they will just appear out of nowhere if I brush my hair a certain way, which has made me think a couple of times that there's something in my hair!
