make a habit, break a habit link-up #2

i am just going to be frank and admit that my first foray into this was just not successful. *sad face*
there are a lot of reasons why september was probably not the best choice for doing this, but overall, i just need to refer back to this post and do better!

last month
make a habit: exercise!
i actually did an okay job of this until i hurt my ankle/foot running a couple of weeks ago - i'm pretty sure it's a hairline fracture. i've stopped running until it heals, but i still plan on speed-walking in the upcoming color run.

break a habit: technology at bedtime.
as an insomniac, i associate a lot of restlessness, frustration, and anxiety with my bed, and technology isn't making that better. however, i was only able to keep my laptop away for a few days at a time. my phone has definitely been kept away, though, so maybe i should consider that a shallow victory?

this month!
make a habit: spend more wisely!
i have issues with impulsive spending, so i started a four-week spending freeze on october 1. since i have a meal plan, the only things i really need to buy are essentials like toilet paper, toiletries, laundry, etc. i am not going to spend on anything beyond those (except for food when i am at a conference next weekend), and i am going to journal my thought process when faced with buying things i really don't need in order to reflect upon how to combat impulsiveness in the future.

break a habit: technology at bedtime.
i am a glutton for redemption because i refuse to fail at this. i would love to get to the point where i get off of my laptop/phone like an hour before bed, but i don't have a predictable bedtime since i'm in grad school. instead, i am just going to (again!) refuse to bring my laptop to bed just like i refuse to bring schoolwork into my room.

honorable mention
not ready to make a habit yet but i am also trying out oil pulling this month.

what habits are you making and breaking this month?
link up below with lauren and i between now and next thursday at 11:55pm!
the link-up will go live the first monday of every month to share goals and progress!

how it works: 1) link up your post on what habits you want to make or break and progress you've made towards last month's. (link directly to your habit post! that means no homepages or unrelated posts - please and thank you!) 2) make new friends! visit at least two other Habit Makers and Breakers and give them some love! 3) include our snazzy button below or link back to your hosts in your post so other people can join in on the fun. (don't forget to follow us as well so you don't miss out on any new and exciting habit making or breaking news!)

Spending more wisely and exercising are on my list! But sometimes the world pulls you away from the positive habits. WHY!?

Oh! Oil pulling! I've read so many great things about doing this, i just can't devote 20 minutes to swishing anything in my mouth! I'm excited to see what you think. Also, technology at bedtime is such a hard habit to break! Good luck to you! Hopefully some restful nights without your laptop will motivate you!

Hi Yalanda...I did oil pulling for like a month. I felt no improvements and because it was so hard to keep to this routine, I decided to quit.

Britt, to help me ease into this habit, I set my alarm on my cell to remind me to log off. Yeah, it was that serious. Or, better yet, I was that pathetic where I couldn't force myself off without a little reinforcement.

I applaud your dedication! Sorry to hear there weren't exciting results at the end!

I know!
I don't know why... *sigh*
But I'm determined to cross some stuff off of this list!!!

I've been doing it everyday for the past 5 days and I have gotten some good results already! My morning breath is way less offensive and my gum pain/sensitivity is gone as well.
I only swish for about 10 minutes while I'm getting ready for the shower and while taking one. I have to spit out after that because I'm afraid I might leak on my clothes while getting ready and we know what happens with oil and clothes!
Anywho, so far so good with the technology, so we'll see how that goes :)

Oh no!
Maybe your oral health is just way better than mine (which I don't doubt... the date of my last dentist's visit is too shameful to post).

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

That's so smart!
For now, I just make sure I leave it at my desk when it's time for bed (I was bringing it with me to bed), since I can't really predict when I can put it away depending upon how late I work. But once things level out next week after all this junk is due, I will definitely try that!

Thank you! :-)

Oh stop! But, yeah...I floss daily, brush multiple times daily and go to the dentist 2x a year. So yeah, I'm real particular about my teef. :-)

Don't let me have to be your accountability partner. :-)

A cure for yucky morning mouth might be reason enough for me!!!

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Hey! Once we get to mid-October, I am SO down for an accountability partner!

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

I need to get like you!

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Well, I wouldn't say "cure." It's still there, but it's just lesser. Maybe over time it might become a cure, though :)

Lol - a spending freeze - that is exactly what I need to do, I am such a bad impulsive spender too :-/ Technology before bed is another naughty habit of mine and I'm sure it contributes to my restless nights too ... thanks for the reminder to log off way before bedtime and good luck with your habit making and breaking!

I had adult braces....paid for by yours truly! So yeah, I'm very particular and protecting this investment. I'm unsure if I would be as particular if I had braces in high school because it would not have been my money. So bad to say that but .....

I'mma need one during the holidays when I get a little shop happy

I LOVE these habits! I need to join the two of you in your no technology before bedtime rule!! I can't wait to read about how oil pulling goes. I'm attempting to go more natural, myself.

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Thank you! Have you been logging off? :)

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Yes!!!! I'm doing my shopping next week!

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Yay! Thanks for joining! I will update soon!
