52 weeks of gratitude x2: something i was given (pt. 2)

i mulled this post over in my head for quite a long time, and i found that even though i have received lots of gifts, it was hard for me to attach such a strong emotional process like gratitude to something material. so, i'm cheating on this week's prompt and choosing to highlight what my mom gives me and everyone she loves: her smile.

my mom has a beautiful and happy soul.
it took me a long time to appreciate her.

when i was growing up, we weren't very close, and something that fueled the fire was my disdain for what i now love about her. i hated how upbeat she was and how easily she was able to smile even when things were tough. while i dealt (poorly) with my depression, i resented the fact that she was able to find joy in things when i couldn't. i mistook that ability for apathy -- i assumed that she didn't care about horrible things that happened because she would quickly smile them away. i didn't understand how powerful that was at the time.

it wasn't until we let each other in that we really discussed things that we kept to ourselves -- the severity of my depression, for example, and the fact that she actually worked hard to smile. i didn't learn until adulthood that she wasn't this disinterested creature who refused to deal with hard things. she dealt with them in a way that would keep her sane and keep her eyes toward gratitude. she struggles with internalizing the feelings of others and often blames herself when things go wrong. and sometimes it was hard for her to smile.

but she always does. she spreads her light, and it is infectious. she makes anyone with whom she comes in contact feel comfortable and safe. she works through things i could've never imagined because she refuses to let them take away her joy. i envy that about her, and though i know i'm not a huge smiler, i long to emulate her and i am grateful for what her smile has taught me.

52 weeks of gratitude x2: a family member (pt. 1)

i am a week behind on my gratitude challenge because of my unplanned blog break, but i am excited to be doubly grateful this week!

since i have such a close-knit family, it was hard for me to focus on just one family member for whom i'm grateful. but since i'm a serious daddy's girl, i think it comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me that i chose to write about my daddy!

similar to the previous "my family is the best" argument, i literally know no person who is better than my dad. he is the best dad/man/human ever.
there is honestly no way to describe how much he does for people, whether they are family, friends, strangers, or "enemies" (though he would never call them that). he is incredibly humble, generous, and wise.

my brother and i always used to groan over the sermon-long life lessons he would give us, but i have found that everything he shared has been true. and even though i didn't appreciate what he said at the time, he never gave up on trying to impart his knowledge to me. he has gotten me out of a myriad of sticky situations, and he has never once held my transgressions against me or judged me.

he is my fellow wine connoisseur, the willing victim of all of my practical jokes and pranks, and the person i know will always listen with a mind towards both compassion and finding solutions. my life would be a mere iota of what it is today were it not for him.

bonus: he's also a great dancer and a horrible joke-teller. what's not to like?

52 weeks of gratitude: my family

putting this post together just made me smile so much. i am so happy that esther shared this challenge!

my family is THE best.
i really just don't even believe anyone else who says this about their families because i know it's not true.
i am so, so, so thankful to be part of such a loving close-knit family -- all of whom will do nearly anything for each other -- and that includes members of my extended family as well.
when we get together, it's just an event for the books.
but i can't do my loved ones enough justice with my words, so... mini photo dump!

have a happy sunday and a great week!
