wash day | rhassoul clay aka “When the BB Brush Just Ain’t Cuttin’ It Anymore”

y’all… i have some really interesting hair updates since China (by the way, i will be sharing lots as promised soon. i will pretty much be writing about China until this blog self-destructs or until i adopt my first child and transition into the incredibly scary world of organic butt wipes and paleo baby foodisms of mommy blogging).

back to the point: my sebum production has been straight up disrespectful lately.
pros of sebum-covered hair: my hair is incredibly easy to detangle, it has some weight so shrinkage is a bit less (except for WNGs… shrinkage is worse for mine now!), and it feels really protected.
cons of OVERproduction of sebum: my hair literally looks like a gray piece of broccoli.

i had a couple of broccoli-esque moments while in China, when my waxy sebum consumed my entire being. i took my hair out of a bun and it literally stood straight up with my coils (aka florets) at the very top. my hair had an immovable gray coating that made it stiff, sticky, and impossible.

so, i picked up a nice jar of rhassoul clay for “washing” when i need deeper clarifying. i read that i  would probably need some herbs or clays for clarifying every now and then, but i really didn't think it would apply to me so quickly. i was definitely wrong, and the boar bristle brush wasn't cutting it.

for my last wash day, i made a mask using clay, about a teaspoon of acv, and lots of water. i applied it on dry hair, let it marinate for about 30 minutes, and then i rinsed. hair felt amazingly clean and soft, scalp stopped itching, and no more excess sebum!
i then stretched with a banded ponytail overnight, trimmed my ends according to the lunar chart, and set on caruso rollers for about 30 minutes.

another set done last week:

success!

*note: since writing this post, i have begun using a little coconut oil on my ends as suggested by many other water-only ladies so that my roller sets are sleeker and to extend the time between rinses. i think the semi-hard water here has started to take a toll (none of the filters i've tried have fit on my shower head), as my hair isn't retaining moisture as much as it used to. i also prefer the reduced manipulation of rolling once or twice per week as opposed to daily rinsing.

how was your wash day?

in pursuit of:
treating my hair as my crown and glory
drastically reducing my carbon footprint

Your curls are soft and sexy. I don't think I've heard anyone refer to their hair as sebum covered. I'm really trying to picture that.

Thank you!!!
A lot of people who do WO might say they have 70% or 100% sebum coverage, but I don't use percentages because I don't know math well enough to know 68.5% of my hair is covered in sebum lol.
It basically is just the sebum is covering my hair from roots to ends, though. It doesn't look different from any old hair - it just feels different.

Like, waxy? I actually Googled this because this is a new aspect of hair for me. How does one get sebum covered hair? School a sistah.

Girl, you are too funny! A lot of broccoli business going on. I cannot wait to start reading post about China! You look gorgeous, and your curls rock!

You have to stop using anything that would strip your natural oils (I stopped using hair products altogether) and then do a lot of scalp massaging and water rinsing. Check out this post: http://thepinnacleproject.blogspot.com/2015/02/wash-day-water-only-method-explained.html

China was good to you! Your skin is glowing and that hair...THAT HAIR! I love it!

I've been on a caruso steam roller binge too! I just love how easy and effective they are!

Love the curls! What size Caruso rollers do you use?

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

Awwww thanks!!!!
Yes, I used to use them so much when I straightened my hair a few years ago, but decided to pull them out again and I'm happy I did!

Thank you!
I ALMOST took a picture, but the level of ridiculousness was higher than my hair.

Thanks, Rachie!
It's the water-only struggle, but I'm learning!

Oooooh! What color???
I used to be a color fiend - it's been so hard staying away.
And thank you :D

Thank you!
For the top picture, I used all larges and jumbos and one medium sized one when I ran out of the others. For the bottom set, I used large and medium and one or two jumbos. I've since picked up two more packs of jumbos, so I will likely go full jumbo (LOL - what?) from this point on.

Your hair looks great. Is this water only routine something that's geared more towards naturals? I only ask because I can't imagine doing that with my hair. But it sounds like something that I might want to try with my daughter's natural hair. Her hair seems perpetually dry and I rarely shampoo but condition her hair all the time.

Britt @ The Pinnacle Project said...

I am actually not sure! I have only seen naturals doing it, but I have also seen a lot of straight-haired women doing it as well. I don't know about relaxed, but I think some relaxed ladies have asked about this on some of the Youtube videos. I've never paid attention because I knew it didn't apply to me.
I actually just began using products again because the humidity really did a number on my hair without product, but my hair didn't feel dry at all until the temperature began to raise. It might be something to try on her if it's not too humid where you are! Or maybe humidity won't affect her at all. It's free to try, so there's not much to lose :)

Thanks for replying. I'm going to check out youtube for more info on it.
